July 25, 2009 has been designated as National Day of the Cowboy.
Started in 2005 the mission of the National Day of the Cowboy nonprofit organization is to contribute to the preservation of America’s Cowboy heritage so that the history and culture which the United States Congress’s National Day of the Cowboy resolution honors, can be shared and perpetuated for the public good, through education, the arts, celebrations, gatherings, rodeos, and community activities.

“Our overall goal is to demonstrate to congress that there is indeed a high enough level of national interest in preserving our cowboy culture and pioneer heritage that the judiciary committee will eventually let us ask to make the Cowboy Day permanent. To add to the substance of national participation, we began a campaign asking states legislators to pass the National Day of the Cowboy or Cowboy Day in their state legislatures. Arizona was the first state we asked in 2008 and the first state to grant our request. The Arizona Senate and House appproved it jointly and concurrently in June, 2008. In 2009, dedicated and enthusiastic NDOC volunteers have lined up several legislative sponsors and have already achieved passage in New York, Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. I am proud of all of these hardworking volunteers, their persistent dedication and the cowboy fortitude they have demonstrated.”
