Jessica Jahiel

A very knowledgeable and respected horse trainer is Ph.D Dr. Jessica Jahiel. I first learned about Jessica from her book Riding for the Rest of Us: A Practical Guide for Adult Riders and since then she has written two others. And in her spare time she has written 1,500(!) articles for magazines and newspapers. Obviously she has a lot of knowledge about horses and riders.

Like most trainers she does clinics and personal consulting, including a pretty unique service where you can send her a video of you riding with a description of what your “problem” is and she will give you advice. Although she specializes in “classical riding” (that means English style riding) her advice works equally well for western riders. She lives in Sidney, Illinois.

“Jessica Jahiel’s system of horsemanship, Holistic Horsemanship®, employs the philosophies, the training techniques, and riding elements of classical riding. Balance, harmony, suppleness, rhythm, and clear, kind communication in the form of a constant dialogue between horse and rider — these are classical precisely because they are kind and correct and they work. The methods and goals of classical horsemanship are timeless and are applicable to any horse, regardless of breed or riding discipline.”

I subscribe to her Horse Sense email newsletter which can be found HERE. It is a free, subscriber-supported electronic Q&A newsletter which deals with all aspects of horses, their management, riding, and training. She writes 8-12 articles a month based on questions from subscribers. Over 1450 articles are currently indexed and searchable in the newsletter archives.

Jessica has really great practical advice and she is a gifted writer who can explain things in easy to understand language.
