Rhinestone Renegades – Women And Bull Riding

When you think of bull riding you think about men riding bulls but times they are a changin’.

I know two high school girls who have attended bull riding schools and love the sport.

A friend, Joy Hawks, recently contacted me about a new organization dedicated to women and bull riding. Joy grew up on horses, attended a Gary Lefew bull riding school as a spectator but ended up trying to ride. In 1997 she was the Professional Women’s Rodeo Association Bareback Champion, Reserve Bull Riding Champion, and Reserve All Round Champion. And she breeds Quarter Horses. Quite a cowgirl!

She eventually fell in love with stock contractor Trevor Walker (Walker Bucking Stock Breeders) and together they have some of the best bucking stock around.

Joy started Rhinestone Renegades as a way to allow other women to get more involved with the sport. It has quickly evolved from a small notion for lady bull riding fans, into an exciting, full blown bull owner competition, for a group of smart and fun loving ladies who prefer to be more than just fans or look to add something new to their current program. There are several different fantasy teams that you can participate in with chances to win real money!

You pay a fee to “fantasy own” part of a bull. For example, there might be 20 women who each own a share. The bull competes in several real events and gains points. At the end of the season the “fantasy owners” of the top bulls receive prize money – just like the real owner does.

Additionally each woman gets a calf of their own which they can sell, trade or complete with in their closed 2012 futurity.

Fun way to follow the sport!
