A Legacy of Legends – Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance

By October 4, 2010 Cowboys, Cowgirls, Horses, Trainers

I spoke with Carolyn Hunt last week about a wonderful new event to be held December 3, 4, & 5, 2010 at the Old Fort Worth Stockyards Coliseum in Texas.

With the outstanding response to last year’s Ray Hunt Memorial, Carolyn, Buck Brannaman and Martin Black are creating an annual celebration that features people continuing the vision of Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt for the next generation of horsemen and women.

Buck Brannaman and Martin Black will each start a colt, followed by ranch roping and working with cattle demonstrations. Doug Jordan, champion cutter, will work with young and problem horses. There will be a demonstration of show jumping by Olympic gold metal winner Melanie Smith Taylor. Each day the work will be at a higher level.

All kinds of people, all kinds of horses, all kinds of events aimed at keeping the Ray and Tom way alive.

Additionally a foundation has been setup. The Foundation’s goal is to generate funding for scholarships to deserving students in pursuit of a higher level of consciousness in conjunction with the horse. Students will be given the opportunity to study with horseman that are deemed qualified. These clinics will be organized and promoted in the spirit of harmony between horse and rider with emphasis on preserving the dignity and well being of the horse while encouraging the rider to reach higher level of horsemanship.

Donations are also being accepted. Any donation will go directly to the scholarship fund and will be used in total for student participation.

The Mission Statement for the event:

• Bring together horseman and admirers respectful of the culture Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt left.

• That these horsemen may demonstrate with their horses the understanding and inspiration Tom and Ray left them with.

• That these horsemen share with each other and admirers alike so all may benefit from their discussions and conference time.

• That Tom and Ray be remembered by scholarships funded from the proceeds of the gathering.

• That these horsemen be rewarded by dividing the benefits of the gathering.

• That the integrity to deliver an inimitable gathering of humble, loyal horseman to appreciative admirers, not be compromised for higher profits or flamboyant, theatrical performances.

• That this gathering would make Tom and Ray as proud of the people gathered as the people gathered are to be a part of their legacy.

Tickets for the three day event are $200 – a bargain.
