A lope is a horse gait between a full out gallop and a trot. It’s a steady, easy gait that is sometimes called a canter in the English riding world. A lope is a three-beat gait (the fore leg and opposite hind leg strike the ground together, and the other two legs strike separately.) that is typically 12 to 15 mph.
