The premier cowboy competition is the National Rodeo Finals held in Las Vegas. This year the dates are December 3-12 and the actual event is held at the Thomas Mack center on the campus of the University of Las Vegas.

SRC_5549The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), is governing authority for the sport and has two types of competitions – roughstock events and timed events – and an all-around cowboy crown.

Featured events are Bareback Riding, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Tie-Down Roping, and Bull Riding. Hundreds of events are held throughout the country each year and those with the most points “make it” to the NRF.

The Double Dollar Ranch folks also hold a good horse auction.

I believe it has the largest trade show anyplace (held in nearby locations) so if you want to buy anything western this is the time. You definitely will run into friends and it is in Las Vegas with all of its attractions. So a great time for you and that favorite cowgirl.

In 2008, the Wrangler NFR attracted a total attendance of 172,747 over 10 days. Tickets are popular and the best seats go quickly but you can usually find last minute tickets on ebay (but be careful) and from scalpers at the event.
